| Fieldbus systems are nowadays prescribed for almost all new plants as overall communication
systems. For this purpose, only control components with a corresponding connection are utilised. Although
many devices possess a serial data interface, they may not have a fieldbus connection. For this purpose,
the use of an external Protocol Converter is a simple and quickly realisable solution.
The protocol conversion between different industry protocols, e.g. 3964R, RK512, Modbus or Modnet and the
fieldbus system can be supplied as standard products. Customer-specific solutions can be realised with
moderate effort. Various possibilities are available for this purpose. For instance, the Converter can carry
an internal depiction memory of the device to which it is connected, by means of which read and write access to the fieldbus system is possible. Alternatively, the telegrams can be converted directly between the individual protocol formats.
The configuration is carried out via the serial diagnostics interface with the aid of a PC. For this purpose
the MSDOS project and diagnostics Program ComPro is available for simple protocols and Slave connections. The
System Configurator SyCon® is required if the converter works as Master at the fieldbus. The configuration
data are transferred by means of the serial COM port of the PC to the converter and are stored in a
non-volatile secure manner in a FLASH-EPROM. In the case of an update, the entire Firmware can be loaded in
the same manner.
Comprehensive functions are available for diagnostics and start-up. Thus, device conditions and transmission
errors are displayed by the LEDs. Further diagnostic functions, especially for testing the fieldbus
communication, can be carried out via the PC with the aid of the ComPro or the SyCon®.
