| The asynchronous short haul modems M-5/ R-5
convert the 2-wire RS485 to a V.24- or M-1 modem
interface, thereby providing an extension of the
RS485 connection for example via the 4-wire M-1
modem interface up to 21 km. An RS485 detector
detects whether the RS485 interface is occupied by
another transmitter, and gives sending permission
to the V.24 or modem interface. If an RS485 transmitter
is transmitting, the M-5/R-5 would detect its
level, switch on the M-1 transmitter and transfer
the data to the opposite site. There the RS485 transmitter
is activated by the data or the M-1 interface
status and transmits the data.
The short haul modem M-5E is a development of
the M-5, and extends the 2-wire RS485 or 4-wire
RS422 via the insensible M-1 modem interface. The
M-5E does not support the RS232/V.24 interface.
The RS-422/RS485 data are transmitted by a symmetrical
10 mA tristate current loop, the devices
being galvanically insulated by optocoupler interfaces.
The information contents and protocols are
not influenced by the transmission, the short delay
times and the galvanic insulation. The transient
protection in the M-5, R-5- and M-5E provides good
protection against lightning and overvoltages, and
the galvanic insulation provides protection if there
are potential differences.
The M-5 and M-5E are integrated in a small, compact
table-mounted casing and are provided with
their own power supply for 230V AC and 24V DC. The
signal status is displayed by means of LEDís (Power,
TD, RD and DCD) on the front panel. The R-5 is the
short-distance modem corresponding to the M-5, in
the form of a plug-in card in the European format,
for the 19î RV-1 rack. R-5 is used where several
short-distance modems are required for a clear
overall arrangement and to save space. M-5, R-5 and
M-5E meet the most stringent requirements regarding
operating safety, function and power, and because
of the easy handling the device can be installed
without problems.

| Range of the RS485/RS422 interface
|
| Maximum transfer distance 1,200 metres at 0 - 100,000 bps. Use pair twisted, unscreened cables. The transfer characteristics deteriorate as the capacitance increases and the cable crosssection is reduced. Use screened cables in heavy interference environment but consider that higher capacitances reduce the transmission distance.
