| The asynchronous M-1LWL and M-5LWL short-haul
modems extend a RS232/V.24 or RS422/RS485 interface
by up to 3 km with an interference insensitive
glass .bre connection (2 .bres). The interface data
are transferred without delay directly via the glass
.bre connection. Both modems are available with
SMA or ST* plugs and operate with 62.5/125µm,
50/125µm, 100/140µm and 200µm (PCS) glass .bre
cable. The output power of the .bre optic transmitter
is adjustable in 3 stages to avoid overloading the
receiver (giving rise to transfer errors) over short
In the M-5LWL the transmit/ receive switching of
the RS485 and the switching on of the transmitter at
the RS422 are effected by the receiving data from the
LWL interface. This enables data transfer rates to be
supported code-transparently and without speed settings
from 0 - 1 Mbits/s. The M-1LWL supports speeds
of up to 100,000 bits/s. The RS422/RS485 interface
can be provided in the M-5LWL with a jumper line
termination.
In order to retain the advantages of a glass .bre
connection, in terms of transient protection and
other electromagnetic interferences, the RS485/
RS422/V.24 interfaces are also protected against
interferences by a transient protection.
The glass .bre modems M-1LWL and M-5LWL are
integrated in a small, compact table-mounted casing
with its own power supply for 230V AC operating voltage.
The signal status is displayed by means of LED’s
(Power, TD, RD and DCD) on the front panel.
The M-1LWL and M-5LWL meet the most stringent
requirements regarding reliability, operation and
performance, and because of their simple handling
the devices can be installed without problem.

Use pair twisted, unscreened cables. The transfer characteristics deteriorate as the capacitance increases and the cable cross-section
is reduced. Use screened cables in heavy interference environment but consider that higher capacitances reduce the transmission distance.
