SHORT-HAUL MODEM
Short-haul modem

H-5H

Short-haul modem
The H-5H asynchronous short-haul modem converts the RS485/RS422 to a modem interface. A PROFIBUS, MOD bus and many other field bus systems may then be transferred by means of an efficient modem interface over greater distances of up to 21 km without interference problems. The RS422/RS485 data are transmitted by a symmetrical 10 mA tristate current loop, the devices being galvanically insulated by insulated receivers. The information contents and protocols are not in.uenced by the transmission, the short device running times and the galvanic insulation. The rapid transfer behaviour is guaranteed by a 4-wire connection between the devices. The modem interface is compatible with the standard M-1 modem interface, the H-5H being provided with a new M-1 modem receiver for transferring data up to 12 km at a speed of 9600 bits/s. The transient protection in the H-5H provides effective protection against lightning and overvoltages, and the galvanic insulation provides protection if there are potential differences. The H-5H is designed for 35 mm DIN mounting rail assembly and operates at an operating voltage of 24V DC. The short-haul modem is mounted on to the mounting rail by means of an assembly base, consisting of a retaining device for the rail and a screw terminal strip for the interface connections and supply voltage. The modem is plugged directly on to the assembly base, the contact with the connections being made automatically. This assembly base guarantees simple installation or replacement of devices. The signal status is displayed on the front panel by means of LED’s (Power, TD, RD and DCD). The H-5H short-haul modem meets the most stringent requirements regarding reliability, performance and operation. The device is installed without problem due to the simple configuration of the interfaces.

Range of the RS422/RS485 interface
Maximum transmission distance: 0-1200 m at 0-100 kbits/s. Use pair twisted, unscreened cables. The transfer characteristics deteriorate as the capacitance increases and the cable cross-section is reduced. Use screened cables in heavy interference environment but consider that higher capacitances reduce the transmission distance.
